FAQ
1. I’ve never heard of allergy drops… how long have they been around?
Allergy drops, also known as Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT), may be new to Indianapolis, but is not new. It was first used in 1910, and has been widely used in Europe for over 60 years. In fact, 75% of all immunotherapy patients in Western Europe get drops, not shots. In England, it is the only way immunotherapy is given. Even the World Health Organization has endorsed sublingual immunotherapy as a viable alternative to injection therapy.
2. Are allergy drops safe?
Absolutely! They have actually been proven to have fewer side effects and cause fewer severe reactions than shots. Severe systemic reactions are reported to occur three times less with allergy drops.
3. Do drops work as well as shots?
Many studies have shown that they are about equal in effectiveness. Additionally, since they are so much more convenient (given at home on the patient’s schedule) patients tend to stick with the program better, so the drops may actually be more effective for some.
4. What does the treatment cost?
Most insurance companies won’t pay for allergy drops. However, your “out of pocket” cost may ultimately be similar to the amount that you’d probably pay in co-pays for receiving shots at doctor’s offices. Because the drops allow many people to stop prescription allergy medications, some patients may even see a cost savings with drops in the long run.
